Do Not Enter the Woods
"iti, why are we unable to return to the woods?" a little seven-year-old kid asks, voice inquisitive, as he gets into bed. As he lies down, he covers himself with his blanket. The boy's mother helps him settle in and smiles briefly. Through the window, a soft glow is created by the moonlight.
"The woods pose a serious threat." seated on the bed, she responds to him. What's more, holds an extraordinary evil inside that goes after individuals." The boy's eyes are curious and confused as he looks at his mother.
"There live the Näkki." She responds to his gaze.
The Na-di? he asks inquisitively, making his mom let out a little laugh.
"Naa-ki." She makes noise. They are water spirits that live inside a lake at the focal point of the forest. They look amicable and wonderful, yet they are not. They are morphers who draw you toward them. They drag you down with them into the water, where you can never escape, once they have you in their grasp. The kid pants in shock at his mom's words.
"Never?" He demands. Never. They consume you once they have you. "she wraps up. The kid's dazzling emerald green eyes are wide with dread.
"Guarantee me, Aleksi, that you won't ever go into the forest." With her own emerald eyes pleading, the woman asks her son with ferocity. The child focuses on his mother.
"I swear." He informs her. The mother gives her child a kiss on his temple and offers him goodnight.
The mothers of Eldmere, Finland, have always told their children this Näkki legend. Keep away from the forest or the Näkki will take you forever. We held the myth in childlike contempt as children. They frightened us enough to where we listened...but we were still youngsters. The following day, we would make fun of each other at school. One of us would claim to be the Näkki and pursue most of us around at break.
As we became older, we understood the legend was only a story, a fantasy, mother's advised their kids to cause them to act and avoid the forest. We also stopped believing over time.
"Maki, Aleksi, and Garreth are here." From the front door, my mother shouts. I quickly eat the remainder of my Korvapuusti. I quickly grab my bag and make my way to the front door after licking the cinnamon from my fingers. My friends are waiting at the bottom of the steps, and I can see them.
"See you later, iti," he said. I say, giving her a little kiss on the cheek. Before I can get out of the entryway, she snatches me by the arm.
"Aleksi."
"Yes?" Knowing what's about to happen, I sigh. Before proceeding to the walkway's conclusion, Maki and Garreth both look up at us, aware of the situation. I turn my consideration back to my mom.
"Have a good time. "she begins. Her hold on my arm tightens. Also, kindly don't go into the forest." She begs.
"I know." When I tell her, my voice sounds a little harsh. I sigh as she slightly flinches.
"Eiti, old pahoillani." I say as I embrace her. She gently pats me on the cheek and smiles softly.
"I am aware that you get irritated when I tell you this poikani. But all I care about is your safety."
"I know äiti, I guarantee." I inform her. Before nodding, her sparkling eyes briefly examine my face. Tomorrow we'll meet again. "she tells me. I leave the house and walk toward my friends after giving her a second kiss on the cheek.
"Are you willing?" With a large grin on his face, Garreth asks. His broad shoulders hum excitedly, and his dark russet brown eyes sparkle. I take a gander at Maki with a cocked eyebrow, to which he shrugs his shoulders.
"You're really invigorated, huh?" As we walk down the road, I inquire. The roads are gradually fading away as individuals get together their sellers for the afternoon and begin advancing home. The sky is colored pink, orange, yellow, and purple as the sun sets.
"Obviously I'm energized. This meteor shower is the most thrilling thing to occur in this town since...since Mrs. Lahti got discovered laying down with postal carrier by her better half." he states, causing Maki chuckle next to me.
"You can't perceive me you're not amped up for seeing a genuine meteor shower." Garreth states, checking me out.
"I am." I tell him. Eldmere is totally encircled by woods and is an unassuming community contrasted with others in Finland. There are only three stoplights and less than 300 people in this area, so there is not much to do. He then gives Maki a look. With a roll of his cornflower blue eyes, he gives us Garreth a gesture. " It's thrilling. Additionally, it's nice to leave the house. He informs him.
"Does your mother still have a dispute with your sister?" I inquire.
"When don't they fight?" he murmurs. " With Ayn's new boyfriend, who I'm pretty sure she's just dating to annoy mom, it's gotten worse over the past few months."
Ayn has always been difficult, and she is a little over a year younger than Maki. She seems eager to get in trouble. Dad has been staying in the den when he's not at work because the argument has become so bad. However presently it's a greater amount of mother yelling and Ayn disregarding her." He sighs once more as he leaves.
"Well this will be a decent interruption." Garreth tells him with a congratulatory gesture.
It doesn't take us long to get to the spring. A brilliant, consuming fire flashes, illuminating the region. Teens intoxicated stutter as the music fills the air. The exuberant screams are barely audible above the rushing water. We still have approximately half an hour before the scheduled start of the shower, according to a quick glance at my watch. We head to the fire to unwind, something we haven't been able to do in a long time.
I'm conversing with a colleague when splendid lights flash across my sight, making me gaze upward. The sound of invigorated cheers and yells swirl around as the meteor shower starts. It is a seriously lovely sight. Over a sky filled with stars, streaks of light shoot.
"Wow. This is astounding." The first genuine smile I've seen on Maki's face in weeks, he exclaims in awe. Before I can concur with him, I feel Garreth pull on my sleeve.
"Isn't that Ayn, with Kalle?" I asked. he asks, pointing out of the way. I recognize Ayn's signature long, blonde hair as I follow his finger towards the creek. As they enter the creek, she is holding Kalle's hand, a teen with dubious motives. Could it be said that they are going into the forest?" I ask.
"AYN!" Maki yells, yet she doesn't hear him. He runs toward them with a scowl on his face. I follow Garreth after we give each other a look. When we arrive at the edge of the forest, the two teenagers have previously vanished inside. Maki yells her name once more, however there is no reaction. Garreth grabs his arm as he takes a step forward.
"You're not really considering going into the woods?" he asks, voice skeptical. Garreth's mother is the most superstitious of us all, instilling in him a fear of the evil within.
I can't just leave her there, especially with him, I can't. Maki states. His voice is hard, but there is a small tremble in it that shows his fear.
"Garreth, he's correct." I begin by approaching Maki. Additionally, the Näkki is strange notion. Simply something our moms made up. We'll be alright. He steps forward with a nod but still appears hesitant. Together, the three of us enter the forest interestingly.
The tree's appear to be considerably really overwhelming very close. The moonlight shines through their dense foliage as they stand tall. Our telephones offer all the more light. As we stroll through, a weighty since of premonition fill me. I feel like we've committed an error entering the forest, however turning around is past the point of no return. His screams for Ayn by Maki continue to echo. The main other sound are the fallen leaves crunching under our feet.
"Am I the only one quietly going crazy." Garreth mumbles. I go to answer when I hear something. I put my finger to my lips and quickly silenced them both.
I hear the sound once more after a few seconds. A sound practically like shouting. Before he leaves, my eyes lock with Maki's for a split second. With a revile, we rapidly follow him.
Screams are getting louder as they get closer.
"AYN!!!" Maki yells uproariously.
"MAKI!!!" she yells consequently, her voice right close to us..
Out of nowhere Garreth goes down as something slams into him. He lands with a thud on the ground, grumbling. I quickly shine my light, revealing Ayn's scared face and Garreth's aching face.
"AYN!" Maki yells, going towards her. He accumulates her in his arms as wails rock her edge. Her wet hair is covered in branches and leaves. Her pale face is caked in mud and blood. She has numerous small cuts on her skin and a gash on her forehead that is bleeding. Her garments are torn, bloodied, and doused in water.
"Ayn, how are you? Did Kalle harm you in any way?" Maki asks in a haste.
She shakes her head, her body actually shudder. " N-no, K-kalle didn't d-do this." She speaks slowly. I take off my jacket and cover her shoulders with it. We must leave this location." She tries to get up, but her legs are shaking, so she falls back down.
"Relax." Maki states She firmly holds onto his arms. Right now, we need to go." she snarls out, her voice has quit shaking. " It will arrive.
"Ayn, what are you discussing? What took place to you?
"They exist. The Näkki, they're genuine." she tells us, the last section a murmur.
They just can't be. It's a stor-." Maki answers.
"It killed Kalle." She comes in and forces us into silence. Hauled him into the lake, kicking and shouting, and destroyed him." She pulls the collar of her shirt down to reveal a large bite mark that does not appear to be human. It nearly got me, yet I moved away in some way." I don't quite believe my ears as I look at Ayn. The tale that my mother would always tell me was true.
Abruptly, a barbaric shriek swirls into the atmosphere making every one of us freeze. The air is filled with more screeches, and their volume is steadily increasing. It will arrive. With her pale blue eyes widening in fear, Ayn speaks in a whisper. As the screams get closer, I quickly assist her in standing.
"Run!" I yell. With Maki and Garreth following us, I grab Ayn's hand and head in the opposite direction she came from. I don't care that bushes and low branches cut into my skin because I'm just trying to get out of the woods.
"This can't occur. This cannot be taking place!" I hear Garreth state in a winded voice. " We simply need to get woods." I let him know when abruptly the shrieking is right adjacent to us. A black mass rushes at me and knocks me down before I can speak.
I feel torment as my body raises a ruckus around town. I'm confused from the beginning, yet my vision clears uncovering sharp teeth coming towards my face. It is thrown away from me as I quickly kick my feet out. I scramble to my feet and grab the thick stick that is closest to me.
The Näkki now resembles a stunning, naked woman. It has white, long hair that drags on the ground. Its pale skin is stained by blood, and its eyes are as dark as night. It flicks its consideration among us, as though choosing who to pursue first. A cruel grin spreads across the face of Ayn as the gloomy spheres settle on it. It charges at her with clawed fingers. I smack the Näkki across the face with the stick.
I hit it again, forcing it to turn around before it can get a grip. Yet again I go to hit it, when it gets the finish of the stick and tears it out of my hand. It then, at that point, folds its hand over my throat, lifting me out of sight. I attempt to pry its hand off, however it is areas of strength for excessively. As he runs toward us with a stick of his own, I can hear Maki yelling.
The Näkki effectively thumps him away and bring its other towards my left arm. It takes my arm and brings it towards its mouth, I attempt to stand up to. As the creature takes a bite, I suddenly feel pain shooting up my arm. My scream fills the room and my ears. The Näkki smiles at me with a bloody grin as it removes its mouth. It then attacks my shoulder, tearing through my skin with its razor-sharp teeth.
The aggravation is totally horrifying and I can feel it through my whole body. My body is debilitating and dark spots fill my vision as it keeps on taking care of from my tissue. Even though I know it's pointless, the shouts of my friends echo in the background. I will bite the dust this evening. I can't stop thinking about my mother and how broken she will be.
"Sorry, äiti, I didn't keep my promise." I think as I begin to become dim.
Unexpectedly, the teeth and tension around my throat are lifted. I gasp and cough as air rushes back into my lungs as I fall to the ground. A shriek consumes the space indeed, yet this one is loaded up with torment. I can barely lift my head to see because I'm still weak. Another shriek arrives at my ears, much stronger and longer than the last.
Several arrows are protruding from the Näkki, which is lying on the ground. It tries to flee, still screeching, but another arrow finds it. This time, piercing its heart, I believe, and making it quiet. The silence of the creatures brings me peace. Although I may be dying, my friends will, at the very least, be fine.
Eyes of familiar emerald green lock onto mine as I begin to pass out. My face is touched by gentle hands as the scent of lilac fills my nostrils.
"Äiti." I murmur. She has a small grin on her face, I can see. Regards, Pahoillani. she states delicately, destroys running her face. " Keep out of the woods, I told you."
"I'm sorry, I know." I inform her.
"Rest." She claims. I give in to the darkness by closing my eyes.
